Scottish Festival 2009!
The 32nd annual Williamsburg Scottish Festival and Celtic Celebration was held on October 3, 2009 at the Rockahock Campgrounds. It was well attended on a perfect day. The Honored Clan was Clan Campbell. The celebration featured some 60 clans and 50 clan tents, opening and closing ceremonies with massed pipe bands, a parade of clans shouting their war cries, pipe band competitions, sword play, sheep dog demonstrations, Celtic dancing, plenty of wonderful Celtic rock and other inspiring music, Scottish and Celtic goods for sale, and lots of Scottish food and drink.
John Campbell was the honored guest, Dr. John Turner was named Scot of the Year, and a special guest was Ms. Mary Christine Edwards, age 85, who enlisted in the US Marine Corps during WWII in 1943 as one of the first lady Marines. She was named Honorary Field Marshal to the cheers of the crowd. The pageantry, color and esprit of this gathering of Scots and Scottish Americans was spectacular and inspiring. This was certainly the year's high point for the Scottish community.
