Subject: Update on the beginning of my studies at the University of Edinburgh
Dear St. Andrew’s Society,
I would like to start with thank you again for your contribution to my studies here at the University of Edinburgh. I am now officially registered and matriculated as a Msc by Research student in Scottish history. As of yesterday, I am studying Scottish club life during the Enlightenment and its spread to the United States under the well published and respected historians, Dr. Alex Murdoch, Professor Tom Devine, and Dr. Stana Nenadic. I will be part of the newly developed Centre for Scottish Diaspora studies as well as one of the leading schools of Scottish history. As a research student, I take classes that specifically deal with my historical interests, such as British/Scottish Enlightenment culture, as well as attending numerous historical seminars and conferences held by the University. However, the majority of my studies will involve individual research in repositories such as the University of Edinburgh library, and the National Library of Scotland, which is one of the few copyright libraries in the United Kingdom, with a final dissertation due August 2010.
On a more personal level, I am enjoying my stay in Edinburgh. I have been fortunate enough to be placed in one of the best located postgraduate flats owned by the University. My flat is very close to both the Edinburgh campus as well as the city centre. I am walking distance from the Royal Mile, Princes Street, the Grassmarket, as well as have a beautiful view of both the Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat. I have been able to be a tourist for the last week and visit the castle, Holyrood Palace, Scott’s Monument, Calton hill, the National Museum of Scotland, St. Giles Cathedral, and Greyfriar’s Kirk. I could not ask for a more rewarding and enriching experience. I am studying the history that I love in the place that I love. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
I will be in touch periodically through out the year with updates of my research as well as give updates on the happenings in Scotland.
Sincerely yours,
Sarah McCaslin
